Bush and other investors for $250 million. From an initial investment of $600,000 George W. profited $14.9 million on the transaction.

On January 22, 2001, (un-) President Bush designates Michael Powell, son of Secretary of State Colin Powell as Chairman of the FCC.

Tom Hicks then becomes Vice Chairman of Clear Channel Radio.

One dog says to the other, “I licked your ass, now you can lick mine.”

On June 2nd, 2003, FCC Chairman Michael Powell voted to further loosen media ownership rules.

Clear Channel goes from owning 36 radio stations (two below the legal limit at the time) to over 1200!

So easy!

Now, you know what this means, right?

If one media corporation owns more and more of the market, we the public get a narrower news perspecive. How are we as citizens supposed to make up our own mind when we’re not given all sides of the story? Sounds like fascism to me. Who could support an administration that supports this kind of a policy?

As for the people who think the media is already liberal enough: Maybe the Journalists, Reporters and News Readers are, and maybe even the Program Directors, but not necessarily true for the CEO’s and owners of those huge corporations. They are the ones in charge, and they support the party that supports the corporations. That’s not the same as supporting the people now, is it?

For thoes of you who dont know...

You have no rights.
The Patriot Act

White house to continue bullshit propaganda videos

The White House, intent on continuing to crank out "video news releases" that look like television news stories, has told government agency heads to ignore a Government Accountability Office memo criticizing the practice as illegal propaganda.

Comptroller General David Walker of the GAO said Monday that his agency is "disappointed by the administration's actions" in telling agency heads to ignore the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress.

"This is not just a legal issue, it's also an ethical matter," Walker said. "The taxpayers have a right to know when the government is trying to influence them with their own money."

The GAO, in a Feb. 17 memo to agency heads, said its review of video news releases distributed to television stations by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of National Drug Control Policy showed violations of federal law barring the use of government money for propaganda. The GAO said, "Television-viewing audiences did not know that stories they watched on television news programs about the government were, in fact, prepared by the government."

Giving no indication that the administration would change its policy, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, "It's very clear to the TV stations where they are coming from."

But the GAO, in the Feb. 17 memo from Walker, said that's not enough. "They are intended to be indistinguishable from news segments broadcast to the public by independent television news organizations," Walker wrote. "To help accomplish this goal, these stories include actors or others hired to portray 'reporters' and may be accompanied by suggested scripts that television news anchors can use to introduce the story during the broadcast."

The Arizona Republic

Some facts that wont make news release:
GWB has actually eaten a live baby in a press conference in London
GWB has snorted enough cocane in college alone to fill 55 golf balls
The bush administration is not only responsible for more than 100,000 deaths, but also they're the cause of pollution, world hungar, the AIDS virus, spam, car crashes, world war III, rainy days, frigid weather, cancer, rise in gas prices, all 404 errors, global warming, an 10 point drop in IQ for anyone who hears Dubya speak, and the eventual loss of meaning for the following words: freedom, terrorist, children, and "our country".

Don't Use Aim

Contained in the AIM licence,

"You waive any right to privacy."

the default location for this file is c:/program files/aim/licens32.txt
in section "Content you Post"

Is AOL the kind of company you want to support?

AIM Alternatives:
Trillian - http://www.cerculeanstudios.com
Jabber - http://www.jabber.org/
Gaim - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

Until we meet again...

Paris Hiltons Phonebook. Once activated, the camera’s software will automatically blur beyond recognition the face of anybody wearing the badge, New Scientist magazine reports.

The threat of being caught on a concealed webcam may also be reduced with technology developed by the Japanese inventors Hiromi Someya and Toshiki Ishino of Kanagawa which fuzzes out anyone caught in the shot.

As a web surfer zooms in on a scene, intelligent face-recognition software identifies faces coming into range. The picture resolution of the faces is progressively reduced, so that individual mugshots are never clearly captured. When the lens zooms back out the clarity returns.

Although the technology will offer some comfort to those who are assailed by the press against their will, it will do nothing for hundreds of aspiring starlets to solve the opposite problem — not being photographed enough.

To this end, Nokia is developing a new Global Positioning System with which phonecam users will be able to invite paparazzi to take their picture. By clicking a “celebrity mode” button the camera sends out a Wi-Fi signal inviting anyone near by with a compatible camera to take a photograph.

Alongside its “privacy protection system”, Hewlett-Packard is developing a camera activated by a brooch or a clipped-on earring which can take a picture of someone without their knowledge.

The earring contains an accelerometer that detects a flick of the head and sends a wireless trigger signal to the camera to take a picture.

Source

Electronic Civil Disobedience and Politics

I suspect I'm not the only one expecting a politically-charged computer worm to emerge any minute. Hacktivism--or "electronic civil disobedience" as it has been called--is not a new phenomenon.

More than six years ago, Chinese engineers hijacked a government communications satellite and propagated their own content over the airwaves (or through the ether). That was just the beginning.

The dust had started accumulating on the once-sexy concept of the hacker and a new paradigm was needed: hacking for political ideals. This concept got some press and actually materialized, although never to the theoretical degrees that were thought to be possible.

Since 9/11 we have seen all sorts of groups express themselves by breaking into Web servers and changing their contents to get their political viewpoints across. Most notably, Brazilian and Asian hackers who target popular sites in an effort to maximize their impact in the same way that billboard ads try to distract us on the Gardiner Expressway.

Web site defacements now occur on a daily basis. As a security professional, I don't pay much attention to them. They don't tend to be destructive and the situation is easily rectified with a site refresh, patch application and password change.

In most cases, they're simply crimes of opportunity committed by anyone who follows a simple formula: locate vulnerable sites by using popular search engines (Google is often a hacker's best friend), use a documented bug in the server software to gain access to it and replace site pages with your own.

Usually accompanied by poor grammar and shocking images, the messages are typically anti-government--but we have seen a number that denounce the wearing of fur and environmental causes.

Ultimately, they are ways to embarrass and intimidate the victim as seen in this archive of recent government site defacements: www.zone-h.org/en/defacements/special.

Now following the hotly contested US Presidential Election which illustrated strong differences of opinion among voters and people in general, one can't help but expect some kind of activity from incensed "hacktivists."

Thousands of civilians have been killed in terror attacks and more notably in various war-related situations in Iraq. This has ostensibly produced anger and a need to speak out, making the Internet the tool of choice for private opinion and public outcry.

In the past, we have seen hacker activity from countries like Spain, Brazil, Russia and Pakistan; most of which are opposed to the current administration's policies to some degree. It certainly wouldn't be far-fetched to expect a few unfriendly messages on hacked sites.

For the most part, it seems that we are seeing mostly distinct groups flex their hacking muscles.

The Muslim Council of Britain has reported being bombarded with thousands of hate e-mails. With the Iraq and Israel conflicts, there is some indication that groups in countries such as Morocco, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are joining forces to cover more ground and perhaps create attacks that have a greater impact.

The thing that should be a concern is the fact that the threats have changed. It is now really easy for anyone to confuse search engines with cloaking software and get to the top of listings, or even to use a simple virus creation kit to get their message across.

More sophisticated (read: connected) hackers can now use "bots" and "botnets" to control hundreds--and sometimes thousands--of computers to knock just about any target off the Internet with a co-ordinated, distributed denial-of-service attack (DDOS).

Ever more serious would be attacks on public utilities or critical infrastructure such as nuclear plants (now directly connected to the Internet) that have been described as inherently insecure by many experts.

So what's next from the outspoken groups that seem to command more Internet resources than average people? Will it be an eruption of civil electronic disobedience, or will we see just a few Web site defacements and maybe a computer worm with a chip on its shoulder?

I'm leaning towards the latter scenario. I believe we will see some evidence of discontent, but it will be in short, disorganized bursts. Most viruses tend to be largely ineffective and quickly subdued.

Site defacements are usually carried out by individuals--not groups--in an effort to show off and spray paint some digital graffiti on someone else's property. Web servers today are much better prepared to withstand hacking attacks than they were even two years ago.

Most importantly, hackers with a true agenda are usually after money, so they tend not to expose their valuable botnets and resources--especially in light of the fact that governments today are much better funded and more aware of information security threats and countermeasures.

By Claudiu Popa

GWB's inauguration speech

On this day, prescribed by law and marked by ceremony, we celebrate the durable wisdom of our Constitution, and recall the deep commitments that unite our country. I am grateful for the honor of this hour, mindful of the consequential times in which we live, and determined to fulfill the oath that I have sworn and you have witnessed. At this second gathering, our duties are defined not by the words I use, but by the history we have seen together. For a half century, America defended our own freedom by standing watch on distant borders. After the shipwreck of communism came years of relative quiet,
years of repose, years of sabbatical – and then there came a day of fire.
We have seen our vulnerability – and we have seen its deepest source. For as long as whole regions of the world simmer in resentment and tyranny – prone to ideologies that feed hatred and excuse murder – violence will gather, and multiply in destructive power, and cross the most defended borders, and raise a mortal threat. There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.

We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world. America’s vital interests and our deepest beliefs are now one. From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on
this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth. Across the generations we have proclaimed the imperative of self-government, because no one is fit to be a master, and no one deserves to be a slave. Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation. It is the honorable achievement of our fathers. Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation’s security, and the calling of our time. So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world. This is not primarily the task of arms, though we will defend ourselves and our friends by force of arms when necessary. Freedom, by
its nature, must be chosen, and defended by citizens, and sustained by the rule of law and the protection of minorities. And when the soul of a nation finally speaks, the institutions that arise may reflect customs and traditions very different from our own. America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find their own voice, attain their own freedom, and make their own way.

The great objective of ending tyranny is the concentrated work of generations. The difficulty of the task is no excuse for avoiding it. America’s influence is not unlimited, but fortunately for the oppressed, America’s influence is considerable, and we will use it confidently in freedom’s cause. My most solemn duty is to protect this nation and its people from further attacks and emerging threats. Some have unwisely chosen to test America’s resolve, and have found it firm. We will persistently clarify the choice before every ruler and every nation: The moral choice between oppression, which is always wrong, and freedom, which is eternally right. America will not pretend that jailed dissidents prefer their chains, or that women welcome humiliation and servitude, or that any human being aspires to live at the mercy of bullies.

We will encourage reform in other governments by making clear that success in our relations will require the decent treatment of their own people. America’s belief in human dignity will guide our policies, yet rights must be more than the grudging concessions of dictators; they are secured by free dissent and the participation of the governed. In the long run, there is no justice without freedom, and there can be no human rights without human liberty. Some, I know, have questioned the global appeal of liberty – though this time in history, four decades defined by the swiftest advance of freedom ever seen, is an odd time for doubt. Americans, of all people, should never be surprised by the power of our ideals.
Eventually, the call of freedom comes to every mind and every soul. We do not accept the existence of permanent tyranny because we do not accept the possibility of permanent slavery. Liberty will come to those who love it. Today, America speaks anew to the peoples of the world: All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you.

Democratic reformers facing repression, prison, or exile can know: America sees you for who you are: the future leaders of your free country.

The rulers of outlaw regimes can know that we still believe as Abraham Lincoln did: “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves; and, under the rule of a just God, cannot long retain it.” The leaders of governments with long habits of control need to know: To serve your people you must learn to trust them. Start on this journey of progress and justice, and America will walk at your side.
And all the allies of the United States can know: we honor your friendship, we rely on your counsel, and we depend on your help. Division among free nations is a primary goal of freedom’s enemies. The concerted effort of free nations to promote democracy is a prelude to our enemies’ defeat.

In America’s ideal of freedom, the exercise of rights is ennobled by service, and mercy, and a heart for the weak. Liberty for all does not mean independence from one another. Our nation relies on men and women who look after a neighbor and surround the lost with love. Americans, at our best, value the life we see in one another, and must always remember that even the unwanted have worth. And our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time.

From the perspective of a single day, including this day of dedication, the issues and questions before our country are many. From the viewpoint of centuries, the questions that come to us are narrowed and few. Did our generation advance the cause of freedom? And did our character bring credit to that cause? These questions that judge us also unite us, because Americans of every party and background, Americans by choice and by birth, are bound to one another in the cause of freedom. We have known divisions, which must be healed to move forward in great purposes – and I will strive in good faith to heal them. Yet those divisions do not define America. We felt the unity and fellowship of our nation when
freedom came under attack, and our response came like a single hand over a single heart. And we can feel that same unity and pride whenever America acts for good, and the victims of disaster are given hope, and the unjust encounter justice, and the captives are set free. We go forward with complete confidence in the eventual triumph of freedom. Not because history runs on the wheels of inevitability; it is human choices that move events. Not because we consider ourselves a chosen nation; God moves and chooses as He wills. We have confidence

because freedom is the permanent hope of mankind, the hunger in dark places, the longing of the soul. When our Founders declared a new order of the ages; when soldiers died in wave upon wave for a union based on liberty; when citizens marched in peaceful outrage under the banner “Freedom Now” – they were acting on an ancient hope that is meant to be fulfilled. History has an ebb and flow of justice, but history also has a visible direction, set by liberty and the Author of Liberty. When the Declaration of Independence was first read in public and the Liberty Bell was sounded in celebration, a witness said, “It rang as if it meant something.” In our time it means something still. America, in this young century, proclaims liberty throughout all the world, and to all the inhabitants thereof. Renewed in our strength – tested, but not weary – we are ready for the greatest achievements in the history of freedom.
May God bless you, and may He watch over the United States of America.

Cue the patriotic music and waving flag footage...

Bush Protests

WASHINGTON, D.C. – If you read most mainstream media accounts, you’d think there wasn’t much of a protest during Bush’s January 2005 coronation week.

Full Story

Submitted by Duncan May

On a side note: Duncan May at a protest gave the finger to President Bush. Once there she deleted his game data including all the items, weapons and clothes he had collected.
Although the boyfriend did not suffer financially he reported the misuse of his account to the police. Police then reported the woman of Toyama Prefecture, to the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors Office accusing her of violating a law banning illegal access to someone else's online accounts.
The woman has admitted the crime. "I did it as revenge for breaking up with me," she told police.
The couple actually met through playing the game, love blossomed in the online RPG and the lovers soon met up. Nir Goldshlager, who discovered the flaw, warned that URL-embedded Javascript could end up causing personal information to be revealed.
If users execute the script by clicking a link, they would be redireted to a malicious website. While people play Tetris, the worm attempts to spread to networked hard drives and other accessible systems on a company's network that use the Microsoft Windows operating system, the firm stated in an advisory. "If your company has a culture of allowing games to be played in the office, your staff may believe this is simply a new game that has been installed--rather than something that should cause concern," Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said in a statement.

Sophos did not mention the previous Tetris worm in its advisory, and it's unknown whether the two Tetris-playing programs are related. The first computer virus to affect a general-purpose computer system was also linked to a game. Virus-like program Pervade was created in 1975 by John Walker--who later founded Autodesk--as a means of distributing the game "Animal" on UNIVAC systems. The virus spread through files transferred between systems on magnetic tapes. Sophos has released its latest antivirus signatures to detect the Cellery worm.

Source: ZDNet

Jan. 20th. Bush's name with a swear word was ticketed for using obscene language in public. The protester said Monday he would fight the citation, calling it a violation of his constitutional right to free speech. Police said the city attorney's office was researching whether the ticket violated any constitutional rights, even though the city attorney had advised police to issue the original ticket late last week.

Mike Wallschlaeger, 41, erected the sign near the Marathon County Courthouse last Friday. An officer took it down and issued Wallschlaeger a citation after receiving a complaint from a passerby, according to police reports. The ticket carries a $102 fine.

Wallschlaeger said Monday he has used the sign with the message "This war is Bushit" during 18 months of protesting in Wausau. "I assume they are going to wise up and drop this," he said.

Source: CNEWS

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pixelanarchy.blogspot.com/2005/01/jan-20th-be-ready.html' title='Jan. 20th. It will be a one-way trip that NASA hopes will reach a cataclysmic end on the Fourth of July.

Scientists are counting on Deep Impact to carve out a crater that could swallow the Roman Colosseum. It will be humanity's first look into the heart of a comet, a celestial snowball still preserving the original building blocks of the sun and the planets.

Because of the relative speed of the two objects at the moment of impact -- 23,000 mph -- no explosives are needed for the job. The force of the smashup will be equivalent to 4-1/2 tons of TNT, creating a flash that just might be visible in the dark sky by the naked eye in one spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display.

Nothing like this has ever been attempted before.

"The most difficult and most challenging part is going to be the actual encounter because we're doing things that nobody has done before," said Jay Melosh, a planetary geologist at the University of Arizona.

Little is known about Comet Tempel 1, other than that it is an icy, rocky body about nine miles long and three miles wide. Scientists do not know whether the crust will be as hard as concrete or as flimsy as corn flakes.

"One of the scary things is that we won't actually know the shape and what it looks like until after we do the encounter," Melosh said.

The comet will be more than 80 million miles from Earth when the collision takes place. The resulting crater is expected to be anywhere from two to 14 stories deep, and perhaps 300 feet in diameter.

A jagged, cratered comet like the one headed for Earth in the 1998 movie Deep Impact would be difficult if not impossible to hit because of all the shadows, Melosh said. Comet Tempel 1 is believed to be smoother and easier to hit.

The scientists came up with the Deep Impact name independently of the movie studio, around the same time, neither knowing the other was choosing it, even though some members of NASA's Deep Impact team were consultants on the picture.

Deep Impact is carrying the most powerful telescope ever sent into deep space. It will remain with the mothership when the impactor springs free the day before the comet strike, and will observe the event from a safe 300 miles away. NASA space telescopes like the Hubble will view the collision, along with ground observatories and amateur astronomers.

The entire mission costs $330 million, all the way through the grand finale.

Big Brother Gillette

RFID, remote frequency identification, tags are becoming more and more widly used in big corporations. These tags will serve a replacement to UPC bar codes. Unlike UPC, RFID tags are unique per product.
EX:
A box of cereal at Wal-Mart has
the same UPC code as a box of
cereal at County Market.

Each RFID tag is different. No two rfid tags alike.

Now to the true purpose of these RFIDs. They are used to track products and even TAKE YOUR PICTURE. Worst of all, consumers are completely unaware!
Gillette is moving rapidly into this movement. They have recently ordered 500 MILLION TAGS! If you open a Gillette Mach3 razor box, the RFID tag is visible, but this won't always be the case. As technology increases, RFIDs are becoming less and less visible. They can be sewn into clothing (which could be used to track individuals, like say maybe... YOU!!), molded into plastic, squeezed between cardboard.
Also undergoing with RFID tags' visibility is a project where it can be printed. This means that text on a product's box could be an rfid tag.

And since RFID codes are unique, they can be combined with credit card numbers linking the product to the name, number, address, etc of the consumer.

Gillette has also created SPY SHELVES. These shelves will take your picture when you lift up an item. Your picture is taken again at the cash register to prove purchase.

For more info on RFID: spychips.com
For more on the boycott of gillette products:
